Books A

Advanced Telescope Making Techniques, Mackintosh . Featuring Selected Articles from the Maksutov Circulars , Edited by Allan Mackintosh. Over a period of 21 years Allan Mackintosh edited and distributed the Maksutov Circular s to Maksutov Club members. The club was originally organized to make a mass purchase of custom molded Maksutov corrector blanks but it soon became apparent that a newsletter was needed to share information on optics and practical glass working to close tolerances. Ultimately, nearly 200 editions of the Circulars were distributed to members. From this mass of material two 300+ page books have emerged which describe a wide range of subjects of interest to the person who has made a telescope and wants to learn more about this fascinating hobby.

A Manual for Amateur Telescope Makers. Karine and Jean-Marc Lecleire, Attention to detail and dozens of comprehensive diagrams are the highlights of the Lecleires’ guide to telescope making. The book begins with a useful overview on grinding and testing mirrors. From there it painstakingly details the step-by-step methods needed to create the optics and mounts for three reflectors: 130-millimeter f/9.2 and 250-mm f/4.3 Newtonians, and a 300-mm f/12 Cassegrain-Coudé telescope.

Astronomy 2008 A Practical Guide to the Night Sky, Dawes, Wallce, Northfield.   This yearbook has been designed for anyone who looks at the night sky whether they are using just their eyes, a pair of binoculars or a telescope. The book has something for everyone from the basic novice up to the advanced amateur astronomer. This includes those with a casual interest who might just want to know, "what is that bright star next to the Moon?" Quasar Publishing has been producing these annual publications since 1991. These yearbooks are written by Australians for Australians. The main addition this year is the reintroduction of the All Sky charts. These cover the entire night sky visible from Australian latitudes. The best ephemeride available for the Southern Hemisphere.

Astronomical Image Processing. Handbook of, This second edition of the Handbook of Astronomical Image Processing (HAIP) and its integral AIP for Windows 2.0 image processing software (AIP4Win2.0) addresses many important changes that have taken place in astronomical imaging since the publication of the first edition. Today's affordable astro-imaging capable digital single-lens-reflex cameras (DSLRs), the growing power of personal computers, and the proliferation of telescopes and imaging accessories has brought imaging capabilities within the reach of practically every amateur astronomer - and this second edition of the Handbook plus AIP4Win 2.0 is ready, willing, and able to assist every observer in making great astronomical images.
In the Handbook, we amplified the original chapters on astronomical equipment and imaging techniques, revised our discussions of astrometry and photometry to reflect the steady growth in these scientific fields, and expanded tutorials in the back of the book to help you get up to speed quickly. On the accompanying CDROM (found on the inside back cover) you will find hundreds of megabytes of sample images you can use to learn techniques such as image registration and stacking that guarantee good results even from those living with suburban and urban skies. Also new are comprehensive chapters on color imaging with astronomical CCD cameras and processing color images from digital cameras, and photon-counting fundamentals every serious astro-imager needs to know.
When you purchase the Handbook of Astronomical Image Processing, you receive one CDROM containing AIP4Win 2.0 that is licensed for use on one personal and a portable computer if you own one. AIP4Win 2.0 requires validation via the web (or telephone) within 30 days of installation. Once validated, you also receive the right to updates (free downloads via the web) and upgrades (for a fee) as they become available.

Astronomical Tables of the Sun, Moon and Planets, Meeus. Here, in one handy reference, are many of the past and future predictable astronomical events of interest to amateur and professional astronomers. Among the subjects covered are planetary phenomena 1990–2020 (inferior and superior conjunctions of Mercury and Venus, greatest elongations of Mercury and Venus, oppositions of Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, ranus, Neptune and Pluto, etc.) oppositions of Mars 0–3000, Equinoxes and Slostices 1–3000; phases of the Moon 1970–2050; occultations of planets and bright stars 1990–2020; sunspot activity 1749–1994 and many other tables (calculating the Julian Day, perpetual calendar, dates of Easter Sunday, Jewish Calendar, Moslem Calendar and much, much, more.
