January : If you can actually see anything through the bushfire smoke you’ll be able to observe 4 conjunctions this month. Jupiter and the Moon (23rd), Mars and the Moon (21st), Venus and Neptune (27th) and Venus and the Moon (28th). All the summer targets are high early and deep space objects worth shooting for include M42 Orion & Running Man, Thor’s Helmet, Horsehead Nebula, Rosette, Seagull Nebula, Christmas Tree Cluster & The Pleades.

You may also want to check on Betelgeuse which is now undergoing a seemingly unprecedented dimming. This might be completely normal OR this could be THE END OF THE WORLD! Ok maybe not. But many of us astrophotographers are hoping it blows up in a supernova to become the brightest object in the sky and the closest supernova to see in recorded history. It’s unlikely to blow away our atmosphere but we don’t really know. The photos would be good though. 🤷🏽‍♂️💥
