March : We can only hope the weather improves after a particularly bad summer for most astronomers. At this point, even the poorly labelled “Supermoon” on the 29th would be a welcome addition to the eyepiece. Orion is slipping away west early now but Carina is now quite high at midnight so the great nebula and some other favourites like “Running Chicken” IC 2944 are worth a poke with the old light bucket.
Early March is a good time for astrophotography as the Moon slips away to nothing by the 13th. NGC 3576 (Statue of Liberty), Gum15 and Gum25 are some examples of bright hydrogen regions dotted around the Carina region, though if you’re up for a challenge, exploring the faint and massive Vela remanent is also worthwhile.
Zodiacal light is now visible if you have a dark enough sky and look towards the sunrise before the Sun rises, or the sunset after the Sun disappears. You may notice a strange column of light that isn’t from the Sun at all, but the faint glow and reminder of the fact that you are indeed, living inside an old nebula from which the Sun was born.
