The Southland Astronomical Society is a small but active group of amateur astronomers based in Invercargill at the southern tip of New Zealand’s South Island. Based at the former Southland Golf Club – Sandy point, Otatara.

The Southland Astronomical Society is a small but active group of amateur astronomers based in Invercargill at the southern tip of New Zealand’s South Island. Members participate in a variety of astromomical activities including education with groups and school children, deep sky observing, astrophotography, aurora observation, solar observation, variable star observing, to name just a few.

The society meets on the first Thursday of each month (except January) at 7.30pm at the We meet at the Southland Golf Club, LInks Rd,Off Sandy Point Rd, Otatara. Meetings consist of general astronomical topics including brief presentations of “what’s up” in the night sky for the current month, usually followed by a more specific activity such as presentations from guest speakers or society members, slide shows or videos of an astronomical interest. The Society’s committee meets before this at 6.45pm. The meeting room is also the home for the society library which houses a good range of astronomical texts and magazines from the very recent though to those of a more “historical interest”.

Current membership is around 35 individuals. We are always on the lookout for new members. A year’s membership with the society costs NZ$30 for adults and NZ$15 for children and students. Membership includes free admission to the public observatory nights, and a monthly newsletter. Members can also use the several telescopes that the society owns as well as borrow any of the books and magazines from the society library.
