The brand new ASI1600MM USB3.0 Monochrome Astronomy Camera is the latest addition to the popular planetary imaging cameras from ZWO.
The ASI1600MM has an enormous 16 Mega pixel new generation CMOS sensor. These sensors offer vast improvements over previous generation CMOS chips. Most importantly for use as an astronomy camera, sensitivity to low light is outstanding while noise is greatly reduced. The read noise of the ASI1600MM is just 1.2e at 30dB gain. This figure easily surpases many current CCD sensors costing twice (or more ) the price! The benefit is higher quality images that pop with low-contast detail without the need for over processing. It also means that many shorter exposures can be combined without adding an unacceptable amount of noise to the final stacked image – so yes the ASI1600 can be used for basic deep sky imaging in addition to the brighter solar system objects.
The ASI1600MM takes advantage of fast USB3.0 transfer speeds. When recording video you can capture up to 23FPS at full resolution. Selecting a smaller region of interest (ROI) when capturing targets with small angular size, such as the planets and you can expect unbelievable speeds well over 100FPS!
When it comes to resolution the ASI1600MM packs a real punch. Compared to many astronomy cameras in the same price range the ASI1600 sensor is ENORMOUS! Measuring nearly 22mm across the diagonal the 16MP chip has an array of 4656×3520 pixels. With most telescopes this sensor will cover a comparatively large area of sky in a single frame. ZWO’s ASI1600MM is a CMOS astronomy camera that is surprisingly affordable considering it’s capabilities. It is suitable for a range of applications from planetary or lunar imaging through to deep sky imaging, as well as just about anything else you’d care to put it to. It is a worthy investment for anyone wanting to get a head start in astro-imaging!
